How to ask an expert a better question

A simple framework for getting more useful answers from experts and their Digital Minds.

A useful question gives enough context to make the trade-off visible. State what you are trying to achieve, what you have already tried and what constraint matters most.

Instead of asking ‘How do I grow my business?’, try ‘I run a two-person service business, referrals have stalled and I have five hours a week for marketing. Which channel would you test first, and what would success look like after a month?’

Ask for reasoning, not only a verdict. Questions such as ‘What would you check first?’ and ‘What would change your answer?’ reveal the assumptions behind the recommendation.

Treat the first answer as the start of a conversation. Clarify any missing detail, test the advice in your own context and use qualified professionals for decisions that require regulated advice.
